Reinsurance Specialist

Full time
Take ownership of non-life treaty reinsurance in a close-knit team where your technical judgement will make a difference. You will help shape and manage our specialist non-life insurer client’s reinsurance programmes, from renewal preparation and treaty placement to reviewing wording, analysing performance and advising underwriting teams. You are comfortable working directly with reinsurers and brokers, and you can see where a treaty may leave a gap against the underlying policy cover. What you will do: · Develop and recommend reinsurance structures that support underwriting growth, protect capital and manage volatility. · Prepare for and contribute directly to treaty placements and annual renewals, including reviewing the quality of renewal information. · Assess proportional and non-proportional arrangements, retentions, limits and programme layers in collaboration with actuarial and underwriting colleagues. · Review treaty and policy wording to identify potential gaps in cover. · Build effective relationships with reinsurers, reinsurance brokers and internal stakeholders. · Monitor programme performance and support the management of complex claims and recoveries. · Provide practical reinsurance guidance to underwriting teams and senior management. What you bring: You have at least 10 years’ experience in general insurance underwriting and treaty reinsurance, with personal involvement in treaty placements or renewals. You can explain the structures you have worked on, the decisions you helped make and how you assessed the wording behind them. You also bring experience with large and complex claims across insurance classes, working knowledge of policy wordings, FAIS compliance, and a three-year post-matric or Insurance Institute qualification. You work independently, communicate confidently with technical stakeholders and enjoy taking ownership in a small team. Your experience may come from an insurer, reinsurer, UMA or reinsurance brokerage. What matters most is the depth of your hands-on treaty and technical underwriting experience. The divisional head generally works a hybrid arrangement that allows two days at home in most weeks.
