Electrical Technician (Nuclear)

Job Purpose
The Electrical Technician is responsible for performing electrical maintenance activities on both safety-related and non-safety-related Systems, Structures, and Components (SSCs) to ensure optimal plant performance, high equipment reliability, and safe operation. The role includes executing preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, inspections, repairs, and surveillance testing activities. The technician also supports plant operational readiness while ensuring full compliance with applicable safety standards, regulatory requirements, and operational procedures.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Electrical Maintenance Activities
The Electrical Technician is required to carry out electrical maintenance activities in a safe, timely, and high-quality manner, ensuring continuous operational readiness of plant systems. This includes executing planned, corrective, and surveillance maintenance on a wide range of electrical systems and components.
The role involves maintenance and inspection of systems associated with nuclear steam supply and balance of plant operations. This includes motors, motor generator sets, reactor coolant pump motors, motor-operated valves, crane systems, lighting systems, power transformers, gas insulated bus systems, switchgear assemblies, protective relays, diesel generator sets, and uninterrupted power supply systems.
Technical Maintenance and Testing
The technician is responsible for performing detailed inspection and maintenance activities on transformers, including components such as LCPs, neutral grounding resistors, dissolved gas analysis systems, and on-load tap changers. The role also includes performing electrical testing such as Tan Delta testing, insulation resistance testing, winding resistance testing, and transformer turn ratio testing.
In addition, the technician conducts mechanical protection device inspections and testing, including PRV, SPR, WTI, and OTI devices. The role requires executing functional tests, alarm tests, and periodic maintenance tests using approved testing procedures and equipment.
The technician must also be capable of operating specialized diagnostic and testing equipment, including Omicron Sibano 500, CT Analyzer, CPC 100, CP TD, and Testrano 600, to support accurate electrical system analysis and troubleshooting.
Switchgear Systems
The Electrical Technician performs inspection and maintenance of switchgear compartments to ensure reliability and operational integrity. The role includes conducting circuit breaker testing such as timing tests, insulation resistance testing, contact resistance measurement, and anti-pumping relay testing.
The technician is also responsible for busbar inspection and testing, including insulation resistance testing, contact resistance measurement, and high potential testing. Functional checks of switchgear systems are also performed to verify proper operation.
Motors
The role includes conducting motor inspections and preventive maintenance activities. The technician performs electrical testing on motors, including insulation resistance testing, polarization index testing, dielectric absorption ratio testing, rotor fault current testing, and motor circuit analysis.
The technician is also responsible for conducting meter calibration activities, CT and VT inspections and testing, and supporting transformer-related testing activities. Familiarity with both online and offline motor control room testing methods is required.
Generators
The Electrical Technician performs inspections and maintenance of generators, including replacement of carbon brushes and associated components. The role also includes conducting generator CT testing and other diagnostic tests to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
DC Systems
The technician is responsible for maintaining and inspecting DC systems, including inverters and UPS systems. This includes conducting DC output characteristic testing, UPS functional testing, and battery inspection and testing to ensure system reliability.
Protection Relays
The role includes testing protection relays using both primary and secondary injection testing methods to ensure correct operation, calibration, and system protection settings.
Instrument and Power Bus (IPB)
The Electrical Technician inspects and maintains IPB systems and is responsible for conducting air leakage tests to ensure system integrity and performance reliability.
Excitation Systems
The technician performs inspection and testing of Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs) and conducts functional checks to ensure proper excitation system performance.
Work Planning and Documentation
The role requires proper planning and preparation of maintenance activities, including ensuring availability of spare parts, tools, and equipment. The technician attends pre-job and post-job briefings and ensures full compliance with maintenance procedures and standards.
The technician is also responsible for maintaining accurate documentation of maintenance activities, equipment history, and system performance records to support traceability and regulatory compliance.
Training and Staff Qualification
The Electrical Technician provides feedback on training programs to improve effectiveness and ensure maintenance standards are consistently met. The role also contributes to workforce development by supporting competency building and knowledge sharing.
Outage and Emergency Response Support
The technician supports outage activities and emergency response operations when required, ensuring safe and reliable plant performance under all conditions. The role may require shift work or extended working hours depending on operational needs.
Operational Efficiency and Planning
The technician contributes to the development and improvement of maintenance work instructions and procedures. The role also supports continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing productivity, efficiency, and overall maintenance effectiveness. The technician is required to prepare accurate and timely operational and regulatory reports as needed.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
The minimum educational requirement for this role is a High School Diploma. The candidate must have at least two years of experience in electrical maintenance within power plant or industrial environments. Previous experience in nuclear power plant maintenance or similar high-risk industrial environments is considered an advantage.
Technical Skills
The Electrical Technician must be proficient in inspection, maintenance, and testing of transformers, switchgear systems, motors, generators, DC systems, protection relays, and excitation systems. The candidate must have hands-on experience with testing equipment such as Omicron Sibano 500, CT Analyzer, CPC 100, and Testrano 600.
The technician must also be familiar with primary and secondary injection testing methods, insulation resistance testing, and mechanical protection device inspections. Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve electrical system issues efficiently are essential requirements for the role.
